During the December Board Meeting, the Olympia Board of Education unanimously approved moving from the Illini Prairie Conference to the Sangamo Conference starting in the 2022-2023 school year for Olympia High School sports and activities. The Sangamo Conference competes in the following IHSA interscholastic activities: Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Track, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Golf, Football, Wrestling, Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, and Scholastic Bowl.
Athens, Auburn, Illini Central, Maroa-Forsyth, New Berlin, Pittsfield (football only), Pleasant Plains, Petersburg PORTA, and Williamsville are the current members of the Sangamo Conference. Earlier this Fall, representatives from this conference reached out to Olympia to determine whether or not we would be interested in joining their conference due to one school (North Mac) leaving the Sangamo at the end of the 2021-2022 school year. After researching the schools and the competitiveness of the conference, it was determined that this would be the best long-term option for our programs moving forward.
We would like to thank the Illini Prairie Conference for their support and understanding of us deciding to make this conference change. We would also like to thank our coaches and staff members for their understanding of the decision to make this move. We are looking forward to creating new rivalries with the members of the Sangamo Conference starting in the 2022-2023 school year.
