JUNE 6th TRULY A GREAT DAY TO BE A SPARTAN!!!
Olympia High School Varsity Baseball and Softball teams captured the IHSA Class 2-A State Championships within minutes of each other on Saturday—June 6, 2009. The fete, accomplished three times in IHSA history (also by Olympia in 2002), capped a fantastic season for both Olympia squads.
The girls defeated Piasa Southwestern 9 – 1 on Saturday evening at the Eastside Center in East Peoria to go along with its championships in 2002 and 2003. The Spartans marched through the post-season - outscoring their seven opponents 70 – 3. The girls finished the season with a record of 37 – 2. Congratulations to Coach Toliver, his staff and the young ladies who represented Olympia so well this season.
Earlier in the evening the boys defeated Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran 8 – 1 to capture their third championship (2002 and 2008). The back-to-back State titles captured by the Spartans has not occurred for 50 years since Maine East High School accomplished it in 1959. Like their female counterparts, the Spartans cut through their post-season opponents outscoring the competition 64 – 7. Coach Ron Smith’s charges finished the campaign with a record of 30 – 6. Congratulations to Coach Smith, his staff and our young men who also made us proud.
