New 3-Year Contract Approved for Certified Teachers
The Olympia Board of Education approved a Contract Agreement with the Olympia Education Association (a local IEA affiliate) on May 19, 2016 at a Special-Called Board Meeting. The Agreement was previously ratified by membership of the Association.
The key change to the Agreement from previous contracts is a departure from the traditional salary schedule typically used in public school systems. Teachers will now receive increases to their salary for demonstrating proficiency in the evaluation process, showing outstanding attendance, coaching/sponsoring activities outside the school day, improving themselves through additional coursework, and mentoring beginning teachers.
Additionally, the Agreement allows for an extension of the instructional day at the elementary schools by approximately 20 minutes. Through a collaborative process and mutual respect, the Board of Education and Association focused on improving language that impacts student learning, and aligning resources to the District's mission of inspiring, educating and challenging each student to achieve personal success.
The Agreement reached between the Association and Board of Education maximized the limited resources available to the school district. It will take effect August 1, 2016 and run through July 31, 2019
