Third grade students at South are kicking off Black History Month by
learning about the Underground Railroad. To introduce the unit, they
read the story “Henry’s Freedom Box.” This is a true account of a slave
who mailed himself to freedom during the 1800’s. To really understand
what the journey might have been like, students pretended to be Henry.
They sat in their “box” (under their desk) for 10 minutes and tried not
to make any noise while their master walked around the room. After the
activity, students decided that the time they spent was not even
comparable to the twenty-seven hours Henry was in his box. According to
one student, “That was the longest ten minutes of my life!” In the
end, everyone agreed that they had a lot of respect for Henry and he was
a very brave man!
