Olympia Superintendent Dr. Andrew S. Wise appreciates the efforts of Senator Barickman in supporting the Evidence Based School Funding model.
Olympia’s General State Aid was $4.7 million in 2009 and has dropped to $2.2 million in 2016. There are several reasons for the drop in General State Aid, including Olympia’s declining enrollment, but one of the main contributors is the State’s broken school state aid funding formula.
Senator Manar(D) and Senator Barickman(R) have two different approaches to school funding.
Senator Manar, although noble in his cause, wants to pour more money into a broken formula (SB 231). By doing so, money for downstate schools would once again be shifted to Chicago Public Schools, and schools like Olympia would once again see a reduction of school funding, albeit after a brief hold harmless agreement.
Senator Barickman’s evidence based funding is the collaborative result of the state’s leading educational organizations with representation from every demographic and region. The formula is based on what is necessary to educate a student based on indicators of success. Olympia would be treated with respect through the Evidence Based Model.
More information on the Evidence Based Funding Formula will be released in the summer newsletter. Read more from Senator Barickman’s website:
