Congratulations to our Olympia Middle School Chorus who received a Division I or Superior rating at the IGSMA Organizational Music Competition on Saturday, February 27th at Normal Community West High School. The students now have the opportunity to advance to the IGSMA State Organizational  Music Competition !

Several Chorus students also participated in the IGSMA Solo and Ensemble Competition on Saturday February 20th at Chiddix Junior High School.  Thirteen students prepared solos for the competition. Bea Harbaugh, Ellie Highsmith, Jazmyn Szadkowski-Natschke, Emma Kindred, Danika Ford, Justin Olson, Jake Cheeseman, Hadley Fudge, Linnea Kerr-Dennhardt, and  Madelyn Wheeler all received a Superior or Division I rating.  Angelica Greenwood, Sarah Driver, and Gavin Wilhoit received an Excellent or Division II rating.

There were also five vocal ensembles competing at the competition. The boy ensemble of Cayden Compton, Tyler Stone, Justin Olson, Jake Cheeseman, Gavin Wilhoit, and Aidan Horoky received a Division I rating for their rousing rendition of The Knight and the Dragon words by Kathleen Black and music written by Audrey Snyder. Two seventh grade girl ensembles also received a Division I rating. Singing the plaintive melody of Redbird with words by  Sara Teasedale and music by Sandra Howard was Hadley Fudge, Ragean Woollen, Rebekah Magee, Michaela Walczer, Kiley Weaver, and Madianna Martinez. The angelic Evening Prayer from the opera “Hansel and Gretel” was sung by Madison Benson, Madelyn Wheeler, Jaclyn Donaldson, Julianna Birkey, and Ellie Highsmith. Our eighth grade girl ensembles were Shannon Harmon, Brinley Mars, Danika Ford, and Angelica Greenwood singing the American Folksong Shenandoah arranged by Laura Farnell and  a triple quartet singing I Lift My Eyes comprised of Sarah Kingston, Linnea Kerr-Dennhardt, Jazmyn Szadkowski-Natschke, Esther Birkey, Emma Kindred, Bea Harbaugh, Josie Litwiller, Grace Melick, Danika Ford, Madison Carter, and Carson Inselmann.

These students are under the direction of Mrs. Aurelius-Muir, the Olympia choral director.
